Most replacement canoe yokes are an afterthought. The Silverbirch Deep Dish Canoe Yoke isn't — it's one of the few wooden options serious paddlers rate as genuinely "proper." If you're replacing a tired factory yoke on a Silverbirch, upgrading a new Hou canoe, or simply want a better-looking, better-carrying yoke on another brand of canoe, this is built to be seen as well as used.
Sculpted for the Shoulder
Unlike a flat yoke, the deep dish profile is sculpted in three dimensions to spread contact across a broader area of the shoulder. It won't turn a wood yoke into a cushioned seat — paddlers doing longer portages often still add a padded cover such as our Level Six Helium Canoe Yoke Pad — but for solo carries and standard portaging, the wider contact area is a genuine, noticeable improvement over a basic flat replacement.
Built From Ash, Cherry, or Both
Each yoke is hand-finished in solid Ash, solid Cherry, or a two-tone Ash-and-Cherry blend, and as a natural timber product, every piece carries its own individual grain and colour variation. Ash is the traditional choice where maximum strength is the priority; Cherry is chosen primarily for its richer colour and grain, and is sold by Silverbirch as a fully legitimate option in its own right — the choice between them comes down to look as much as anything else. The two-tone option gives you both in a single piece for a distinctive finish few competing yokes offer.
Please note: mounting bolts, washers and other fittings are not included. Check your canoe’s internal width and existing mounting points before cutting or drilling. Once trimmed, the yoke should be positioned so the canoe balances correctly when carried.
Fits Silverbirch, Hou — and Possibly Yours
This yoke is confirmed for use across the Silverbirch Broadland range (14 Tandem, 15, 16 and SBHL) and the new Hou canoe range — it is not confirmed for legacy Hou models. If you paddle a different brand entirely, or an older Hou canoe, it may still fit — but fit depends on your canoe's gunwale shape and how the yoke attaches, not just its width, and this varies by brand and construction. Fitting it to any canoe outside the Silverbirch and new Hou range is done entirely at your own risk; check with us before ordering, as we cannot accept liability for the outcome of fitting this yoke to an unconfirmed model.

The yoke is supplied deliberately oversized, so it needs trimming to fit your canoe's exact gunwale width before installation — a straightforward job with a saw and sander, typically done by laying your old yoke over the new one to mark the cut line.
