Hou Chieftan
Hou's biggest all-round canoe, built on a scaled version of their best-selling Prospector hull to carry up to 4 adults or heavy expedition kit. Fully customisable colour and outfitting, hand-built in Norfolk, and proven with commercial hire fleets that trust it with total beginners.
At 16'10" (513cm) and built on a refined Prospector hull, the Chieftan handles everything you throw at it: loaded family days on the water, week-long backcountry trips carrying lots of kit, or commercial hire fleets where reliability and passenger safety are non-negotiable.

Hou Chieftan — Hou's Biggest All-Round Canoe
At 16'10" (513cm) and built on a refined, scaled-up version of Hou's best-selling Prospector hull, the Chieftan is the largest boat in the Hou range — and it's designed to do everything, not one thing well.
Loaded family days on the water, week-long backcountry trips carrying serious kit, or a commercial hire fleet where reliability and passenger safety with total beginners are non-negotiable: the Chieftan is built for all of it. Despite its size, its length also means it moves through the water quickly rather than feeling like a barge.
Built to Carry, Built to Trust
The Chieftan is rated to a 500kg ultimate capacity — a static load limit, not a recommendation to paddle fully loaded — and comfortably carries 4 adults or a smaller crew plus a serious volume of kit. Seating can be configured from a simple two-seat tandem up to a full four-seat layout (a two-plus-two family set-up, or a three-seat arrangement), a configuration only the Chieftan and the 17ft Silverbirch SB17, are long enough to offer.
Trusted Where It Matters Most
This is a boat that gets used hard: Hou founder Justin Snell has spoken directly about how frequently commercial hire and activity businesses choose the Chieftan, precisely because it can carry a lot of kit while still letting relatively novice paddlers cover good distance safely on a multi-day trip. It's not a claim made in the abstract — used, ex-hire-fleet Chieftans do turn up for resale through UK hire operators, which is about as real a proof point as a load-carrying, beginner-friendly canoe can have.
Built to Take a Beating
The hull is polyethylene, built as a three-layer sandwich construction — the same tough, low-maintenance material choice behind the rest of the Hou range. It's what lets the Chieftan take the knocks that come with repeated car-topping, riverbank landings and heavy commercial hire-fleet use without the crack risk of a composite or fibreglass hull, and it needs far less upkeep in return. The trade-off is weight versus a composite equivalent of the same length — worth factoring in if you're planning to car-top or lift the boat solo.
Built Your Way
Every Chieftan is made to order, with control over exterior hull colour, trim height, seating, yoke, kneeling thwart, lacing and packaging. Low-line trim comes as standard — it's a little lighter and cuts down on windage across open water — while high-line trim sits a touch higher for a drier ride in choppier or moving water. If you're planning a family 2+2 or three-seat layout, note that the centre seat takes the yoke's usual position, so solo carrying needs a separately specified removable yoke.
Fully Configurable Chieftan
Every made to order Chieftan can be customised to suit your preferences and needs.
You can configure your canoe with options such as:
- Exterior hull colour
- Trim height (Low-Line or High-Line)
- Seating options
- Kneeling Thwart
- End grabs
- Lacing colour options
This means the canoe you receive is still built to your exact specification, rather than being a fixed pre-configured model.
If there is a specific requirement you need that isn't available on this product page, please contact us and we will see how we can accommodate.
Where It Performs Best
The Chieftan handles open lakes, estuaries and canals as comfortably as flat and moderately moving rivers — a genuine all-water boat, not a specialist. It isn't built as a technical whitewater canoe but can handle bouncy whitewater; for dedicated whitewater paddling, our Silverbirch whitewater canoes are the purpose-built choice.
Hand-Built in Norfolk UK
The Chieftan is designed and built in Britain, not imported and assembled — the same team that built it can talk you through any adjustment to the standard set-up.

FAQs
The Chieftan can be configured for up to four seats — a two-plus-two family layout or a three-seat arrangement — and comfortably carries 4 adults in real-world use (depending on individuals weight and gear in the canoe). It's also the only Hou boat, alongside the 17ft Silverbirch SB17, long enough to fit a fourth seat at all.
No. 500kg is an "ultimate capacity" — a static load limit measured by the industry-standard test for how much static weight it takes to bring the boat down to a 6" freeboard, not a recommendation for how much weight to paddle with. Real paddling loads should sit well below that figure; the boat's practical 4-adult-plus-kit capacity reflects genuine usable capacity, not the static maximum.
Yes. It's built to be forgiving for paddlers of all abilities, and it's frequently chosen by commercial canoe hire operators specifically because it lets relatively novice paddlers cover a good distance safely, even loaded on a multi-day trip.
Yes — a solo or kneeling-thwart configuration is available, and two paddlers can comfortably use a boat set up for four. If you specify a centre seat for a 2+2 or three-seat family layout, note that it takes the position of the carrying yoke, so solo carrying (not paddling) needs a separately specified removable yoke.
Not according to Hou founder Justin Snell, who notes that the Chieftan's extra length actually makes it "quite a fast boat through the water" despite its size — a trait shared with the traditional Prospector-style hulls it's descended from, which were built to paddle well both loaded and unloaded.
Low-line, the standard default, is a couple of kilos lighter and reduces windage on open water. High-line sits a little higher for a drier ride in choppier or moving-water conditions. Either can be specified when you configure your Chieftan.
It handles open lakes, estuaries, canals and moderately moving rivers comfortably, but it isn't built as a dedicated whitewater boat. For technical whitewater paddling, the Silverbirch Agent 88 OC1 is the purpose-built choice in our range.
Polyethylene keeps the Chieftan tough enough for repeated family, expedition and commercial hire-fleet use, and easier to look after than a composite hull — it shrugs off the knocks a big all-round boat takes without the crack risk or premium cost of fibreglass or carbon construction. The trade-off is weight versus a composite equivalent, worth bearing in mind if you're planning to car-top or carry it solo.
Yes — Hou founder Justin Snell has spoken directly about how frequently commercial hire and activity centres choose the Chieftan for its kit-carrying capacity and beginner-friendly handling, and used ex-hire-fleet Chieftans do turn up for resale through UK hire operators.
Every Chieftan is made to order, with control over exterior hull colour, trim height, seating, yoke, kneeling thwart, lacing and packaging — a level of configuration hand-finished in Norfolk that a fixed-colour, off-the-shelf listing can't match.
